San Diego Fall & Holiday Mini Sessions: Your Questions Answered
Fall and holiday mini sessions are one of the easiest ways to update your family portraits, document how much your children have grown and check holiday-card photos off your list—all without committing to a full-length photo session.
Each Millard Creative Studio mini session is short, relaxed and intentionally guided. With a variety of beaches, parks, natural settings and holiday-inspired locations throughout San Diego, families can choose a setting that feels right for them.
If you’re considering booking a session, here are answers to the questions families ask most often.
What is included in a Fall or Holiday Mini Session?
Each session includes:
15 minutes of photography
8 professionally edited, high-resolution digital images
A private online gallery
The option to purchase additional images and professional prints
Gallery delivery within approximately two weeks
The option to purchase rush delivery, when available
After receiving your gallery, you’ll choose the eight photographs included with your session. If you fall in love with more, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase additional images.
Are 15 minutes really enough for family photos?
Yes! Fifteen minutes may sound quick, but mini sessions are intentionally planned and guided to make good use of that time.
I’ll help position your family and use simple prompts to encourage movement, connection and natural expressions. We’ll aim to create a combination of polished family portraits and genuine moments between you and your children.
The shorter format can be especially helpful for young children who may lose interest during a longer session.
Who can participate in a mini session?
Mini sessions are designed for one immediate family.
If you’d like to include grandparents, multiple households or a larger extended-family group, please contact me before booking. A full family session may be a better option because it gives us enough time to photograph the entire group and create the individual family combinations you want.
What should we wear for family photos?
Choose outfits that coordinate without matching exactly. Soft neutrals, natural earth tones and subtle colors tend to photograph beautifully in San Diego’s coastal and outdoor settings.
Consider colors such as:
Cream or ivory
Sand or beige
Sage or soft olive
Warm taupe
Dusty blush
Light caramel
I often recommend starting with Mom’s outfit and coordinating everyone else around it. Natural fabrics and textures—such as linen, cotton, lace, light knits and flowing materials—add visual interest while keeping the focus on your family.
Try to avoid large logos, neon colors and very busy patterns. Most importantly, choose clothing that feels comfortable and allows everyone to move naturally.

Will you help us pose?
Absolutely. You don’t need to arrive knowing what to do in front of the camera.
I’ll guide your family through positioning, movement and easy prompts while watching for the natural interactions that happen in between. The goal is to create photographs that feel polished without making your family look overly posed.
What if my children don’t cooperate?
Children do not need to behave perfectly for us to create meaningful photographs.
As a mom, I understand that young children may need movement, encouragement or a quick reset. Rather than forcing every child to sit still and smile, we may walk, play, cuddle or let them interact with you naturally.
Before your session, try to make sure children are rested and fed. You’re also welcome to bring a small, non-messy snack or familiar comfort item.
When should we arrive?
Please arrive early enough to park, walk to our meeting point and make any final adjustments before your scheduled appointment.
Because mini sessions are booked back to back, arriving late will reduce your photography time and your appointment cannot be extended. Some San Diego locations require more time for parking and walking than others, so be sure to review the detailed instructions you receive before your session.

Parking recommendations
Our specific meeting point
Any location-specific preparation instructions
Many of the listed parks and beaches cover a large area, so please use the directions I provide rather than relying only on the general location name.
Can we bring our dog?
Dogs are welcome only at locations where they are legally permitted. Coronado Dog Beach is the strongest option for families who want their dog to be an important part of the session.
Please check with me before bringing a pet to any other location. Dogs should be comfortable around people and other animals. I also recommend bringing a helper who can hold the leash when your dog isn’t being photographed.
What happens if the weather is unfavorable?
San Diego weather can change quickly—especially near the coast. I’ll monitor the forecast and location conditions as your session approaches.
Sessions will generally continue through marine layer, clouds or mild coastal weather as long as conditions remain safe and photographable. Overcast skies can produce beautifully soft, even light.
If your session needs to change because of unsafe weather, a location closure or another condition outside our control, I’ll provide updated instructions and explain the options available under your booking agreement.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Mini sessions are reserved for a specific date, location and appointment time. Because only a limited number of sessions are available at each location, please review the cancellation, transfer and rescheduling terms in your booking agreement before reserving your appointment.
When will we receive our photographs?
Your private online gallery will be delivered within approximately two weeks of your session.
You’ll be able to view the finished photographs and select the eight digital images included with your session. Additional digital files and professional prints may be purchased through the gallery.
Rush delivery may also be available for an additional fee.
Are the holiday setup images exact?
Images representing the Holiday Styled Greenhouse and Holiday Styled Studio Arch are AI-inspired concept images intended to show the creative direction and overall feeling of each setup.
The finished designs may include variations in greenery, furniture, décor, color and smaller details while maintaining the planned holiday style.
What if we need more time?
A mini session may not be the right fit for every family—and that’s completely okay.
Consider a full family portrait session if you:
Want more time for children to warm up
Prefer greater variety in poses and backgrounds
Want to include an extended family group
Need a date or location outside the mini-session schedule
Want a slower, more customized photography experience
