Could Your AI Headshot Be Costing You Business?

As a San Diego brand photographer, I've seen a huge increase in AI-generated headshots over the past year.

Some are incredibly convincing.

Others... not so much.

But regardless of how realistic they look, they've made me stop and think about something much bigger than photography:

Trust.

In Today's World, Authenticity Matters More Than Ever

We live in a time where fake social media accounts, phishing emails, AI-generated videos, and online scams have become part of everyday life.

Whether we're applying for a job, networking on LinkedIn, or hiring someone for a project, we're all making quick decisions about one thing:

Can I trust this person?

When someone reaches out to me and their profile photo looks AI-generated, I hesitate.

Not because I think they're trying to be dishonest.

But because I immediately wonder...

"Is this a real human? Is this a scam? Is this really what they look like?"

That split second of uncertainty isn't the first impression I'd want my business to make.

People Hire People

Your headshot isn't meant to be perfect.

It's meant to represent you.

Your smile.

Your personality.

Your confidence.

Your professionalism.

Those little details help people feel connected before you've ever met.

An AI-generated image may create a polished version of you, but it can't capture your personality or the subtle expressions that make you approachable.

Especially for business owners, consultants, attorneys, real estate agents, healthcare professionals, and executives, those connections matter.

Confidence Can't Be Generated

One of my favorite parts of every brand session has nothing to do with the camera.

It's watching someone realize they're far more photogenic than they believed.

Many clients arrive saying things like, "I'm terrible in photos," or "I never know what to do."

By the end of our session, they're laughing, standing taller, and seeing themselves in a new light.

That confidence doesn't disappear when the gallery is delivered.

It shows up every time they update their website, post on social media, send a proposal, or introduce themselves to a potential client.

When you're proud of your photos, you're more likely to use them—and that confidence becomes part of your brand.

AI can generate an image.

It can't give you that experience.

Real Moments Still Matter

The same is true beyond headshots.

AI can create beautiful marketing images.

It can create a conference that never happened.

It can invent smiling employees who don't exist.

What it can't do is document your actual business.

It can't photograph your team collaborating.

It can't capture your company culture.

It can't preserve genuine interactions with your clients or document the excitement of a successful event.

Those are the moments that build credibility because they're real.

As someone who photographs businesses across San Diego, I've seen firsthand how authentic images tell stories that AI simply can't recreate.

My Take

Do I think AI has a place? Absolutely.

I use AI tools in my own business to help streamline editing, organize images, and improve my workflow.

Technology isn't the problem.

But when it comes to introducing yourself to the world, I still believe authenticity wins.

Because at the end of the day, people don't choose businesses because they have the most polished headshot.

They choose businesses they trust.

And in a world where almost anything can be generated, being genuinely you may become your greatest competitive advantage.
