Balboa Park Event Photographer | Capturing Two Days of Conversations, Creativity, and Connection for the Prebys Foundation

Some events are designed to inform.

Others are designed to inspire.

And then there are the rare events that bring together visionary thinkers, artists, journalists, educators, and changemakers—all within one of San Diego's most iconic cultural destinations.

Recently, I had the privilege of providing photography coverage for a two-day experience hosted by the Prebys Foundation in Balboa Park. Spanning multiple venues and experiences throughout the park, the event brought together nationally recognized speakers, thought leaders, performers, and community leaders for conversations centered around creativity, culture, education, wellness, and the future of our communities.

As a San Diego event photographer, these are the events I love most—where storytelling extends far beyond the stage.

Photographing a Multi-Venue Event Across Balboa Park

One of the unique challenges—and joys—of this event was the variety of experiences spread throughout Balboa Park.

Programming included keynote sessions and panel discussions inside The Old Globe, outdoor gatherings and meals in the Sculpture Garden, breakout sessions designed to foster meaningful conversations, and an intimate VIP dinner hosted inside the stunning lobby of the San Diego Museum of Art.

Documenting a multi-day conference like this requires more than simply photographing speakers.

It requires anticipating moments, navigating changing environments, balancing documentary coverage with editorial imagery, and ensuring organizers have a gallery that tells the complete story—from keynote presentations to quiet conversations between sessions.

A Lineup of Visionary Voices

The speaker lineup reflected the caliber and impact of the event.

Attendees heard from Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, founder and CEO of Khan Academy Sal Khan, Emmy-winning comedian and social commentator W. Kamau Bell, and poet and artist Rupi Kaur.

Sessions also featured renowned physician and bestselling author Dr. Eric Topol, journalist Jessica Yellin, New York Times bureau chief Natalie Kitroeff, award-winning writer and producer Gloria Calderón Kellett, and Gen Z historian Kahlil Greene.

Entertainment and cultural experiences were woven throughout the program with contributions from actor and playwright Ins Choi, hip hop theatre artist Miki Vale, celebrated chef Ruffo Ibarra, and leadership voices from organizations including The Old Globe and San Diego Unified School District.

What made the event remarkable wasn't simply the names—it was the exchange of ideas and the sense of optimism shared throughout the two days.

Why Great Conference Photography Is About More Than Speakers

When organizations invest in bringing together leaders and visionaries, the value of the experience deserves to live beyond the event itself.

Strong event photography provides assets that support:

  • Future event marketing

  • Annual reports and donor communications

  • Media relations and press coverage

  • Social media campaigns

  • Sponsor recognition

  • Website content and blog stories

  • Internal communications

  • Recruitment and community engagement efforts

The most valuable images are often the ones between the presentations—the genuine reactions, conversations, laughter, and moments of connection that reveal the heart of an event.

Those are the photographs that continue telling the story long after the final session ends.
